Nurse's Slayer Is Released

William A. Morey, convicted in 1951 of first-degree murder in the bludgeon slaying of Ann Arbor nurse Pauline Campbell, left Southern Michigan Prison near Jackson this morning in 19 - degree weather. Morey, formerly of Ypsilanti, wore a light jacket but no gloves. “This (the release paper he is carrying) is enough to keep me warm,” he said. Morey’s imprisonment began Nov. 23, 1951, after his conviction in Ann Arbor. Upon the recommendation of the Parole Board, Gov. William G. Milliken commuted his life sentence. Morey plans to work for an Arizona accounting firm and engage in freelance writing. He did a lot of writing while in prison. The murder and the trial were later the subject of a book by John Bartlow Martin called “Why Did They Kill?” (AP Wirephoto)
