Damage expected to top $50,000 when a check is completed was caused early yesterday when fire swept through the top two floors of the old Allmendinger organ works in the 100 block of S. First St. A large part of the damage was from water used in the three-hour battle in near-zero weather to halt the blaze. The scene during the worst of the fire is shown in the above picture.

Firemen work their way onto the second floor of the building at 2010 Washtenaw Ave. to keep flames from spreading to the north wing of the 15-year-old brick home. All six occupants of the home managed to escape unharmed. Capt. Arthur Stauch carried one elderly woman to safety from her first floor bedroom. A caretaker and his wife were forced to leave their basement apartment through a window. The dwelling is owned by John E. Stowe of 312 Juniper Lane, Barton Hills. He estimated the loss at more than $60,000. (Other pictures on page 22.)

SMOKE HIDES DWELLING: Heavy clouds of acrid smoke all but hide the 15-room Washtenaw Ave. home as firemen attempt to pour water into the southeast corner of the basement where the fire apparently originated. The thick fumes which came from slow-burning insulating material hampered firefighting operation during the long struggle to get the fire under control. Directing the fight was Fire Chief Ben Zahn seen walking at left. (Pictures by News Photographer Eck Stanger)

After fire virtually destroyed the second floor of the south wing and intense heat and water damaged the rest of the two-story brick building at 2010 Washtenaw Ave. last April, owner J. E. Stowe asked Colvin, Robinson & Associates to redesign the two-family residence. At left is a News photograph of the fire at its height; above is the structure as it appears today, awaiting occupancy. An apartment has been built into the basement; another on the main floor. The bearing walls were retained, but otherwise, the building's interior is radically changed. Among features are wide use of sand-blasted fir paneling and decorative glass panels along the wall in the hall under which are planting pockets.
