Ann Arbor Police Chief Walter E. Krasny said today the arrest yesterday of two employees of a campus area restaurant has broken a major supply link in local marijuana traffic. Jeri L. Hess, 17, of 1112 Hasper, and Eugene A. Waxman, 25, of 709 Dewey, are in the County Jail under bonds of $15,000 each on charges of selling marijuana. Miss Hess and Waxman were identified by Chief Krasny as employee of the Whistle Stop Restaurant, 611 S. Forest Ave. The chief said the two suspects sold marijuana to narcotics detectives from the Ann Arbor Police Department and the Michigan State Police. Krasny said a total of nine persons in the restaurant were taken into custody but only Miss Hess and Waxman were held and charged. The other seven face charges of possession of marijuana, the chief said. The Whistle Stop Restaurant has been under what Krasny described as "a tight vigilance" for some time. "We are convinced this was a contact and delivery point for marijuana traffic," the chief said. "I'd say it could be called a major narcotics outlet for this area." He said the arrest of Miss Hess and Waxman and the temporary detention of the other seven persons is considered a strong move to dry up the narcotics supply in Ann Arbor. Krasny said at the time of the arrests yesterday, more than four pounds of marijuana valued on the illicit drug market at $5,000 was confiscated by his detectives and State Police officers. He said the arrests were part of a continuing campaign by the department against drug traffic. In the past year, 150 narcotic arrests, most of them for marijuana, have been made in the city with 90 persons brought to trial on the charges, Krasny said.
