Judge Postpones VA Arguments
Judge Postpones VA Arguments
DETROIT — Arguments on defense motions to overturn the conviction of two women for poisoning patients at the Ann Arbor VA Hospital have been postponed until Nov. 2.
U.S. District Court Judge Philip Pratt was to hear those arguments today, but he granted the delay to allow both sides to review the motions and make responses.
Defense lawyers for Leonora Perez and Filipina Narciso are asking Pratt to overturn the July verdict on several grounds, including prosecution midconduct and judicial error.
Perez and Narciso were convicted of conspiracy and using the muscle relaxant Pavulon to poison five patients during the summer of 1975.
Both women remain imprisoned at the Alderson Federal Reformatory for Women at Alderson, W. Va., where they are undergoing up to 90 days of court-ordered psychiatric evaluation and testing.
When the evaluation process is completed, the women will return to Detroit where Pratt will pass final sentencing.
They could be sent to prison for life.
