City Bank Robbery Suspects Arrested

Two men, one of whom lives in Ann Arbor, were arrested by FBI officers Friday in connection with the robbery last month of a branch office of the National Bank & Trust Company of Ann Arbor.

Neil Welch, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Detroit office, identified the suspects as John W. Ulmer, 22, of 1124 Nielson Court, and Chester A. Shepard, 20, of Detroit.

Welch said the men were arrested by Ann Arbor police and FBI agents as a result of a combined investigation of the bank holdup.

Ulmer, who is single and employed at a local record shop, and Shepard, who is unemployed and married with five children, will both be charged with armed bank robbery, Welch said.

The robbery occurred on Sept. 21 at the National Bank & Trust Company’s branch office at 1156 Broadway Ave. Approximately $2,600 was taken at gunpoint by a man carrying a snub-nosed pistol who, according to witnesses, kept telling the

bank teller giving him the money to “hurry up.”

The bandit fled out the front door of the bank where he apparently joined a companion who was waiting outside, authorities said.

Welch reported that the suspects appeared Friday before U.S. Magistrate Paul J. Komives in Detroit and bond was set at $25,000 for each man.
