2 Policemen Are Struck At West Park

Two Ann Arbor police officers were stoned and beaten at West Park Wednesday afternoon by a group of 15 to 20 youths.

Police reported that officers Walter Willard and Michael VanDam were standing near the park’s shelter when a group beneath the structure began to pelt them with rocks. Authorities said the officers were on routine duty.

After retreating to the basketball courts, they were again the target of rocks, police said. One of the stones struck Officer VanDam on the side of the head, but he was not seriously injured.

Officers said two youths who attempted to flee from the park were arrested by police in connection with the rock throwing.

According to police, the two officers were repeatedly punched and beaten as they tried to break up the group.
