West Park Shelter Dedication Turning Into Major Production

Public Picnic, Entertainment Being Planned

Details of the program for the West Park shelter dedication next Wednesday—including a City Council-Police Department softball game and picnic event for citizens—were announced today at City Hall.

The softball game, now set for 6 p.m., will begin the program. The actual dedication phase of the program will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Dedication plans were outlined today by City Administrator Guy C. Larcom, jr., and his administrative assistant, Samuel C. Gesko, jr.

The softball game—according to the plans, that is—is slated to continue until the beginning of the dedication activities.

May Augment Team

The council team probably will be augmented with some administrative officials.

The picnic will begin at 6:30 p.m. while the game is in progress. Citizens are asked to bring their own picnic meals. Watermelon will be furnished for dessert.

Citizens from throughout the city are invited for the picnic, it was pointed out. In addition, letters with respect to it will be given to children participating in West Park recreation activities to take to their parents.

The shelter will be open throughout the evening for inspection. There will be craft displays and pictures of activities pertaining to the public recreation program.

The 7:30 p.m. activities will include entertainment, with arrangements for the entertainment being handled by the City Recreation Department, which operates under city-Ann Arbor School District auspices.

Jazz Band To Play

A jazz band will play to signal the beginning of the 7:30 phase. The band also will close the program.

Mayor Cecil O. Creal will be the principal speaker, while Councilman Russell J. Burns, the city’s mayor pro-tem, will serve as master of ceremonies and make introductions.

Council members, Citizens Recreation Board members and other public officials will be introduced. Also to participate are the structure’s architect and builder.

The mayor also will present trophies in connection with recreation program events.

A teen-age chorus of 20 to 25 members will sing.

There will be a table tennis exhibition by Bill Sonandres, past senior men's city champion, and his son, Tom, present boy’s champion.

Ice cream is to be distributed to children at the conclusion of the activities.

In case of rain Wednesday, the program will be held the following evening.
