Heusel Gets Security Post At University
Former City Police Officer Hired By U-M To Fill New Position
Albert Heusel, who retired July 15 as detective captain in the Ann Arbor Police Department, will become plant security officer for the University effective Aug. 1.
Heusel’s post is new to the University, according to Walter M. Roth, U-M superintendent of plant, who announced the appointment.
The action is another move on the part of the U-M to improve security regulations covering University property in Ann Arbor, Roth said.
Duties Outlined
Heusel will be active in two main areas, according to U-M officials.
1. He will directly supervise the night watchman force of approximately 18 men who patrol buildings to guard against fire and illegal entry. This will relieve Edward S. Warren, chief building custodian, of this responsibility and give him more time to devote, to his other duties;
2. He will serve as chief contact man between the Ann Arbor Police Department and the University. This is expected to centralize responsibility for keeping the police informed about University events in which they may be interested as well as simplify the exchange of information by both sides.
Heusel's sphere of activities may be expanded further in the future, but no definite decision has been made as yet, U-M officials said.
Separate Force Denied
The University was quick to point out that the appointment of a plant security officer does not mean the U-M is moving towards establishment of a separate police force.
“It is hoped that the pattern of cooperation with the Ann Arbor Police Department already In effect will be continued and expanded,” Roth declared. "The appointment is merely a move on the part of the University to centralize responsibility for maintaining close contact with the Ann Arbor police.”
Heusel, a lifelong resident of Washtenaw county, was born in 1898 just outside Ann Arbor. He joined the Ann Arbor police force as a patrolman in March, 1924, and became assistant to the sergeant in 1927.
He was promoted to detective in 1939, to detective sergeant in 1942 and to detective captain in 1946. He retired from the force this year after 28 years and four months of service.
He is married and lives at 510 Fourth Street.
