Feted For Long Service

More than 75 years’ service on the Ann Arbor police force is represented by these three officers feted at a dinner given last night by members of the department. Reading congratulatory telegrams sent them by Mayor William E. Brown, jr., are (left to right) Patrolmen Benjamin Ball and Walter Schmid, and Warrant Officer William Marz. The Western Union delivery boy (extreme left) is Robert Olsen. Each of the officers was given a silver badge and 25 silver dollars in recognition of their service.

Department Fetes Marz, Schmid And Ball

Three Ann Arbor police officers whose aggregate service totals more than 75 years were feted at a surprise 25th anniversary dinner given in their honor last night by department members.

The three officers — each of whom received inscribed silver badges and 25 silver dollars for a quarter-century of meritorious service—were Warrant Officer William Marz, 54, and Patrolmen Waiter Schmid, 49, and Benjamin Ball, 56.

Detective Capt. Albert Heusel, honored two years ago for completing 25-years police duty with the department, also received 25 silver dollars. The money was donated by "old time’’ Ann Arbor merchants.

Creal Presents Awards

The presentations were made by Council President Cecil O. Creal, who lauded all department officers for their devotion to duty and individual initiative.

Marz, who lives at 800 Gott St., was a patrolman from June, 1926, to January, 1947, when he was promoted to the rank of warrant officer.

A patrolman since he joined the force in April, 1925, Ball has often received departmental commendation for his attention to duty. He lives at 432 W. Huron St.

Schmid became a patrolman in June, 1926. He was made coin meter repairman in October, 1944, following release from the hospital for a service-incurred injury suffered when he fell from a ladder while on patrol.
